For many of us, it's the only way to start the day. But where did this iconic brand come from? How did it become so popular? Let's take a little trip down memory lane and find out.
Even many history buffs don't know that the first Old Spice product was actually a women's fragrance called Early American Old Spice which debuted in 1937.
Old Spice for men followed quickly in 1938, and the rest, as they say, is history!
It all started in 1938 with the launch of Old Spice for Men, a line of products that included aftershave, cologne, and shaving cream.
From the very beginning, Old Spice was marketed as a luxurious product for discerning gentlemen. The company ran ads featuring images of elegant yachts and well-dressed men, with the tagline "For the man who commands success."
In 1953, Procter & Gamble bought Old Spice from its original owner Shulton Inc. P&G quickly set about expanding the Old Spice product line.
In 1957, they introduced Indian River Cologne, which was followed by Lime Cologne in 1958 and Pinehill Cologne in 1961. 1961 also saw the launch of Old Spice After Shave Lotion, which quickly became a bestseller.
The 1970s brought more new products to the Old Spice line, including deodorant, shaving gel, shampoo, and conditioner. All of these products were marketed with the same focus on luxury and success that had characterized the brand since its inception.
In fact, many of the commercials from this era featured images of successful businessmen in sports cars or yachts with beautiful women nearby—all using Old Spice products, of course.
While Old Spice continued to be popular throughout the 1980s and 1990s, it wasn't until 2010 that the brand truly recaptured its former glory.
That year saw the debut of "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like," an advertising campaign that featured actor Isaiah Mustafa as a suave ladies' man who uses Old Spice products.
The commercial was an instant hit, going viral on social media and making oldspice.com one of the most-visited sites on the internet.
It also spawned numerous commercials featuring other actors as well as a series of web-exclusive videos showcasing Mustafa's character interacting with real people. Thanks to this creative and wildly successful marketing campaign, Old Spice is now more popular than ever before.
Old Spice is now the No. 1 antiperspirant and deodorant stick and body wash brand in the U.S.!
So, whether you've been using Old Spice products for years or are just discovering them now, there's no denying that they're an iconic part of American history.
For over 80 years now, they've been helping men look and feel their best—and there's no reason to think they'll be slowing down any time soon!
